Gag me with a spoon...er....salt.....

If things go the way of Patriots (JWR reference), it would be in most people's interest to own a dog. They are emotionally therapeutic and who wont need that, but they are an EXCELLENT alarm system.

As such, there may come a time when poisoning dogs in order to invade a home another night might become common place.

This little piece of information may save your life and the life of your pooch....

SALT....

You may have to make your dog barf if it has ingested something that could kill him. A tablespoon of salt, poured down his throat and then holding his mouth shut while he swallows will do the trick.

And it does the trick pretty quickly, so make sure you are outside or at least on tile ;) Your dog will promptly empty his stomach right then and there....

Take this for what its worth - file it away - talk to your vet....But I have used this once on my dog and after about 5 minutes, he was back to his usual self with no after problems except he wanted a big glass of water, as we all do after barfing :)

I've had to do this but used salt in warm water, got it down the dog using a turky baster. Think this method is much eaiser.

Just a caveat - not all dogs are great alarms.

Some won't bark at a stranger, others bark all the time, so you can't tell if someone pulled up, if a stranger pulled up, or the dog feels good. My neighbor had one, big dog, white, longish hair, and I forget the name of the breed, but they are territorial - the spend their lives walking "their" territory and barking. One night, after midnite, the barking sounded .. different. I looked out, saw the ditch was afire, and called the fire dept. Next day I bought my neighbor a big bag of dog food.

I am ashamed to admit this, but I had to make him barf what was left of my son's baby blanket up...

He wouldnt sleep without it and there was only a tiny peice left and I would rather wash it coming out this end than the other...

Basil didnt seem to mind and he got ALOT of love afterwards ;)

Brad - You are correct about needing the "right" dog.

Good info... and as for guard dogs and barking. Barking for an alarm dog is good, but they have special training for Guard dogs. This is only training you want to go through if you need it more than not because the dog won't be as good of a "pet" anymore. There won't be the same type of playing, but if you live in an area where crime is rampant or you have a specific need for more protection than your average American... training or adopting a Guard dog may be a good idea too.
